The basis and priority of a Judeo-centric eschatology is fresh exposition of
the biblical text and not historical theology. When the pietist leader Philipp
Jacob Spener was criticised for attempting to challenge the parched
orthodoxy of his time, and therefore the heritage of Martin Luther, he gave
an enlightening response. While readily confessing that he was a dwarf when
compared with the Wittenburg reformer's stature, nevertheless he maintained
that standing on the shoulders of this giant he was enabled to see further
ahead. Hence great theologians of the past past ought to be helpful
servants, but never controlling masters. What should control us at all times
is personal mining of the sacred text for the purpose of discovering the
original intent of the mind of God.
